Recently NURBS has gained increased
notoriety as a method of expressing complex curves and smooth shaped surfaces. Non-uniform
shapes such as these are commonly in the design of molds for the aerospace and automobile
industries.
1. What is NURBS INTERPOLATION?
(1)
This feature allows the interpolation
of complex curved surfaces, by utilizing the same expressions that were used to describe
the surfaces in the design stage. Previously, Spline shapes were only achievable by
generating a multitude of small liner moves creating approximately the same shape. Some of
the benefits of using NURBS interpolation are:
Smooth cutting surface of the work
piece can be obtained.
Length of CNC part-program can be
drastically reduced.
Cutting time can be reduced.
2. By using NURBS INTERPOLATIO
(1)
The length of the CNC part-program
shortens about 1/3--2/3 compared with the CNC part-programs by small consecutive lines.
(2)
Data Transmission from host computer
to CNC is faster because of the shortened data length.
(3)
Smoother cutting surfaces are obtained
by interpolating the actual curved surface.
3. NURBS Interpolation can be used
effectively when
(1)
Part shape has no excessive radial
features which require abrupt changes in feed rate.
(2)
Large shapes, which typically
experience reduced line definition when increasing shape tolerance.
(3)
Smooth shapes, which are designed by
differential calculus expressions.
